Where most sisters get stuck

Arabic and Tajweed are the two foundations of fluent recitation.

For an English speaker, both are difficult to start.

The terminology is Arabic. The explanations are dense. Most resources hand you definitions and lists of letters, with very little you can actually see.

So you keep reciting the way you always have, unsure whether a letter is correct, how long to hold a sound, or which rule applies.

There is a simpler way to learn this. Every rule I teach comes with a diagram, a mnemonic and Quranic examples, so you can see the rule, remember it and apply it while you recite.

Assalamu'Alaykum

I'm Maryam El-Kiki.

I memorised the Quran at 19 and hold an Ijazah in Matn Al-Jazariyyah. I am completing my Tajweed Ijazah in Hafs 'an Asim, insha'Allah.

I also hold a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Teaching, and I have taught Quran for more than ten years.

My teacher training shaped the way I explain difficult concepts. Hearing an explanation once was never enough for me as a student. I wanted to see what was happening, connect it to something I could recall, then practise using it. That is how I teach now.
